I have such a hard time getting people to understand my view on this law. People just don't understand about unions. They are terrified that they are all corrupt and evil.
What people don't realize that unions help people. They created the middle class in this country, and now, with the decline of unions, the middle class is disappearing too. Surprise, surprise...now that the WI government has effectively busted the union for their state employees, I can't wait to see how many other states will follow.
I read a lot of the comments on CNN & MSNBC's coverage of it, and it seems split as to those who oppose the law, and those who approve of it. What I don't understand, is why conservatives, in general, fear and loathe the unions?
Unions were created to keep employees safe. There were not originally designed to "get more money"...they were created because working conditions were so poor, and employees were treated so badly, that we needed them. Well, I have a sneaking suspicion that those times will be on us soon. I can see it, and have seen it for years, working in "Right to Work" states, AZ & NC. People like me, those who value work, and don't treat a job like a social club, are terrified of losing our job. Every second, of every day, our employer holds the threat of firing us, for absolutely no reason whatsoever. They also know that we can leave our job at any time, for no reason whatsoever. But it's not quite the same thing to them, as it is to us.
Working in these right to work states as I have, I have had some very good employers. Most notably, Albertson's Inc. Albertson's Inc., is a grocery chain spanning the country. When I first started working there, I made union scale wages, and had benefits like sick and vacation time, and insurance working only 20 hours a week. I know, crazy as it sounds, but I worked my tush off for them. Everyone did. We all worked really hard, because it was worth it. We got paid well, guaranteed raises after working so many hours, it may have only been $0.10/hr, but it was there. Then, way upper management decided we had it too good, and the stock holders weren't making enough money. So...SLASH THE BOTTOM, AND STACK THE TOP. It came down that all accrued sick time was going away. Then, in order to qualify for benefits, (and by benefits, I mean sick time, vacation time, health insurance, short term & long term disability) an employee had to maintain an average of 30 hours per week, in any 13 week period. All new hires would not get the same pay grades as before, every job would start at minimum wage, DOE of course. Also, every departments budget was cut, and hours were reduced. Where before a Dept manager would work 48 hours a week, and have his/her employees working anywhere between 8-32 hours, now, get rid of the 8 hr person, and the 32 hr person, and do it scheduling each person NO MORE THAN 24 HRS A WEEK.
Well, as you could guess, the employees were not happy. We tried to organize, and it fell apart after a meat department manager was fired for trying to join the union even though he was management. They got their way. Also, the company fell apart after all of this. It used to be a large nation wide company, run by Larry Johnston, and now, I believe that it has been broken up into two companies because dear old Larry cooked the books.
Maybe, if they had quit trying to rape the bottom to feed the top, none of that would've happened.
The main point I'm trying to make is, unions are there to protect the employees. Yes there are bad leaders, just as there are bad people everywhere. Maybe, we should tweak the rules a little bit, but destroying collective bargaining is not the way to go AT ALL.
